Yeah, fair opinion. I was never to keen on the character either - I just think that Evans did a better job portraying him this time around and displayed wisps of critical thinking.
I think it’s weird that Captain America was the leader of the Avengers in the first place - but Spidey has his own movie premiere coming out, so perhaps he was busy.
It was good, I liked it.
Seriously though, I thought Joss Whedon did a great job.
First point of order, I liked that it was a bit lengthier because the story really got a chance to develop over time instead of rushing it all together. I feel that by doing this, the plot and character development had a seemingly natural developing rate. It also gave the character’s enough time to establish themselves as a team and also allowed the conflict to establish itself. I felt the style was dead on for the type of movie it was (ie lighter than the batman series but enough story line and plot development to differentiate from the typical super hero movie)
The dry humour interlaced in the dialogue was great (and not limited to Stark’s dialogue, which was very pleasant)
Over all, the filming style and quality + dialogue was essentially what it needed and promised to be (true to Whedon style…if you don’t count dollhouse)
Individual character assessment -
Not gonna lie, the Iron man movies have been my favourite of all the avenger movies prior and I do have a bit of a lady boner for RDJ. He did not disappoint in this film either and he remained to be the shinning star that he is.
However, I was most impressed with the Hulk.
I thought that Mark Ruffalo did an amazing job portraying Banner. There is just this certain humbleness that he possesses that Norton couldn’t achieve. He played the Banner character so well. You could tell that, underneath the calm, meek demeanor, there was struggle and restraint. That line where he said “that’s my secret, I’m always mad” was just perfect. As hulk, I couldn’t help but be completely engaged and, let’s face it, he just kicked so much ass.
I was even impressed with the Captain. I didn’t really like Captain America but in this movie, I found him to be more assertive and more of a leader. In his own movie, he just pretty much followed orders and did his thing but in the Avengers, I found him to be more free thinking and intuitive. He wasn’t just so willing to trust authority and was finally fighting for real truth, not just perceived truth (i.e. when he challenged Fury with the secret arms plans) Finally, he became the fighter for the American citizen, not the American Government. Still though, he wasn’t the most interesting.
Thor was good - you could tell the character grew up and was becoming a real fighter for justice and balance and what have you. He had a stronger set of moral code. His dynamic with Loki was great.
Hawkeye was good too. I don’t really know much about him. He seemed to be stoic the who time, perhaps living up to the whole hawk-like personality.
I don’t like Scarjo as black widow. I think they could have gotten a real Russian actress to play her. I just wasn’t at all impressed with her.
Loki was great. Hiddleston played him perfectly in both movies. He did a great job presenting the madness, resentment, emotionally wounded trickster. Plus, I find him to be really attractive.
all and all, I would recommend seeing the movie, even if you haven’t seen any of the other movies.
